LODESTAR STUDIO

Guiding experienced screen professionals to remain creatively authoritative in a changing industry.

No technical overwhelm. Just the path from what you know to where you want to be.

Why Lodestar Exists

Your skills already translate.

Your creative judgement, your instincts, your craft — they already translate. What you need is to understand how new tools, formats, and workflows serve your storytelling, how they expand what's possible for you, and how they carry your authority into what comes next.

The industry is moving — it is in its most monumental transformation to date. Production models have changed. Budgets have changed. Streaming reshaped the broadcast landscape forever. And now we have entered another significant transformation — from AI to virtual production and everything in between.

Yet the real challenge is not the technology. It's that so many talented screen professionals are feeling displaced. These are people who have spent decades developing creative judgement, storytelling instincts, collaboration skills, craft and the ability to bring ideas to life. That experience has enormous value. Now in this period of change, many are asking: How do I carry this experience forward? Where do I belong now?

Lodestar Studio is the bridge between where you are and where the industry is going.

The screen industry will continue to exist on shifting sands
— and the lodestar is the only constant light in a dark sky.
It is the trusted guide.

Creative judgement, well-earned experience, and brilliant storytelling will always matter. That’s Lodestar Studio.

Sarah Thomas Moffat filming on location

Sarah Thomas Moffat is a cinematographer and director whose career began in the camera department and grew through every level of the craft — camera assistant to Director of Photography — across three decades of film, television, and commercial production. Holding dual British and Canadian citizenship, she has built a truly international career.

Her range runs from series Director of Photography for History Channel and others — leading camera teams off the grid in some of the harshest conditions on earth — to being the first woman hired as a "racer-cam op" on The Amazing Race Canada, to documentaries filmed on every continent. And cinematic narrative drama for CBC and Sky. Nominated by the Canadian Society of Cinematographers and others, she has won awards for her cinematography across all genres. One of Sarah's specialties is virtual production, wherein she has delivered training for Netflix, served as VP DP for SMPTE, and demoed live for groups such as the DGC and the ASC. She also speaks internationally, delivering seminars and panel talks from Eurocine to Siggraph.

Her commitment to the international screen community has spanned decades — from the Canadian Society of Cinematographers to the International Moving Image Society and BAFTA Scotland, where she is a voting member. Through workshops, mentorship, and community groups built and run in her own time — including a women-in-film community more than five thousand strong — she has given back to the industry that shaped her, alongside a full working career.

Lodestar Studio, from Sarah and her parent company Balanced Media Enterprises, gives screen professionals advanced, craft-first guidance for a changing industry — taught by someone who has been where you are and gone further. No technical overwhelm. Just the path from what you know to where you want to be.
